Plan the product data, cavity review, sample checks and production release needed to turn a molded pulp insert concept into an approved pack.
Begin with reliable product geometry
A physical product, accurate 3D model or dimensioned drawing is needed to define the cavity. Weight, centre of gravity, fragile areas, cosmetic surfaces, connectors and allowable contact zones should be identified before detailed tooling work begins.
Resolve the cavity and outer box together
Clearance, ribs, draft, wall transitions, finger access and nesting all affect the space required around the product. The outer box should be developed with the insert so neither component is forced to compensate for an unresolved fit.
Use each sample to answer a specific decision
An early structural model can review fit and removal access. A representative formed sample can review material behaviour, surface and nesting. The approved production reference should identify the accepted geometry, workmanship criteria and any tolerances that remain critical.
- Product location and movement
- Loading and removal sequence
- Surface and colour standard
- Outer-box closure and pack-out
Release tooling only after the approval record is clear
Record the approved model or sample, product revision, cavity geometry, surface direction, colour, outer-box relationship and expected tests before production tooling is authorized. Tooling cost, timing and minimum practical volume are quoted after these requirements are reviewed rather than stated as one universal figure.
Verify the loaded pack for its distribution journey
The final review should include the product, insert, retail box and master carton. Testing should reflect the expected movement, compression, vibration and handling conditions of the actual route.
