What makes a rigid box production-ready

A strong presentation box depends on structure and tolerances as much as finish.

Technical guide

A strong presentation box depends on structure and tolerances as much as finish.

01

Set product clearance and removal access

The insert should hold the product consistently without making it difficult to remove. Finger access, ribbons, pull tabs and the order in which products are presented need to be resolved with the actual items.

02

Treat board, wrap and hinge as one assembly

Greyboard thickness, paper wrap, turned edges and hinge gaps all change the finished dimensions. These tolerances are especially important in book-style boxes, drawers and close-fitting lift-off lids.

  • Board thickness and grain
  • Wrap thickness and edge build-up
  • Hinge or drawer travel
03

Locate magnets and inserts before artwork approval

Magnets, ribbons and inserts can influence artwork position and surface flatness. Their locations should be fixed before final prepress files are released.

04

Prototype the complete opening sequence

Review the retail box with the product, insert and presentation components installed. The approval should cover fit, opening force, alignment, finish and how the box is protected inside its transit carton.

Make the next approvala physical one.
